Big Start for Big Jon Reporting on College Football

NCAA Football 2015 Season

Week 1

By Jonathan Gillespie

Summer is coming to a close. Soon, the cool air will be subbing in for the hot air. The leaves will be changing colors. Pumpkin flavored everything will be hitting the shelves. Hoodies will be worn multiple days in a row. However, it’s not the decline of sweating, trees draining themselves of chlorophyll or the pumpkin spice lattes thats gets me pumped about the Fall. It’s the start of football season, more specifically college football.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love me some NFL. I am a longtime Washington fan, but it’s the college games I have been missing just a bit more. I am huge Virginia Tech fan. I went to school there. I have witnessed first hand being in Lane Stadium when "Enter Sandman" comes on. It’s simply amazing. It’s not only the tradition there but the traditions that surround some of other schools from around the country that I love. The players seem to be playing for something bigger than themselves. I could go on and on but I am sure you did not pull up this article to read an awkward love letter about college football.

"Dear NCAA, I can't keep my feeling hidden any longer. I don't care if the NFL knows..."

The nice people here at GGR are allowing me to give you my weekly breakdown of what I noticed in the world of College Football.  I will try to watch as many games as I can during the week....well technically as many games my agent (aka my wife) will allow me to. Of course I will be giving special attention to Virginia Tech, ACC Schools, and Top 25 match ups. Now that we all know why I am here, it’s time to get started:

Week 1

So since Virginia Tech isn’t playing until Monday, I have other games to watch. They have quite the challenge ahead of them as they play the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes. They beat them last year and I know Bud Foster will have plenty of time to put together a solid defensive plan against them. I just hope the Hokie offense will do well. I will have a lot more to say about the game after it’s completion. Here are some of the highlights from the first week of college football.

(12)  Clemson 49 Wofford 10

I wanted to watch this game because I heard such amazing things about the Wofford Terriers. Sorry, that was a lie. I have never heard of Wofford but I think it’s hilarious to have Terriers be their mascot. Nothing brings fear into the heart of their opponents like the menacing Terriers. Watch out for your ANKLES!!!

"I'm totawee fwightning! GRRRRR!" YES YOU ARE!!!! Lemme give you a frightening belly rub!

YES YOU ARE!!!! Lemme give you a frightening belly rub!

It’s actually the other way around. I heard Clemson is the favorite for winning the ACC. They were impressive and their QB Watson looked sharp. Then again they were playing Wofford. Also, I am pretty happy that they aren’t in the Coastal Division of the ACC.

huh, that's interesting, I was unaware that Clemson football was naturally fresh

 (13)UCLA 34 Virginia 16

I come form a family of UVA fans. Though Virginia Tech is my team, I do want to UVA do well...but not when playing Virginia Tech. Unfortunately, this was not a great start again for Virginia. Looks like Mike London’s seat is only going to be getting hotter. Rosen, the true freshmen quarterback for UCLA is going to be huge and I expect ESPN to have a slight love affair with him. It may even rival the one ESPN has for Tim Tebow. He had so many awesome throws. UCLA easily took care of UVA. UVA still struggles to score touchdowns in the red zone. The good news is that if Virginia Tech loses at least UVA lost also. There is always a silver lining.

Well, there's the problem right there! How's UVA going to beat a bear playing football?

(20)  Wisconsin 17( 3) Alabama 35

Here we go, the big match up of Week 1! Of course, in my mind the Virginia Tech and Ohio State game is bigger, but I am slightly partial. I was super excited about this game because, for the most part the first week of college football is all blow outs. The big teams have their tune up games and beat the snot out of smaller teams. So here we have what is supposed to be a possibly close game. Well, I was wrong. As usual, the Alabama defense told Wisconsin to sit down and only speak when spoken to.

"Really Wisconsin? You're gonna talk trash? We could probably win the NFC South! You guys have cheese, and that's it."

Upset of the Week (So Far....GO HOKIES!)

(15)  Arizona State 17 Texas A&M 38

Everybody loves a good upset, especially the beat-down variety. I think Arizona State should blame their new uniforms for this lost. They are bad.......

Texas A&M Defender: "Gold on white? You look like one of the Bee Gees! I HATE DISCO!!!!!"

Blowout of the Week

Ole Miss 76UT-Martin 3

Well, this was unfortunate.

"We changed our logo from a Yosemite Sam lookin' guy to a bear, see Washington pro football team! You can do it, too!"

And, there you have it folks. What I saw in Week 1. Now that it's Monday I will only be thinking positive thoughts hoping that Virginia Tech looks good. If they win I will be so happy! But, if they are still competitive with them and still lose. I will consider that a win.

Dude...Ohio State is going to lose their mind on 3rd down when everyone shakes their keys. They won't know what to do with themselves!!! And the gobbling sound effects! And...uhmmm...the SMOKED TURKEY LEGS!!!
