Week 2 College Football Preview

GillespieThumb2.jpg

By Jonathan Gillespie

I know what you are all thinking, where were you last weekend Jonathan? How was I supposed to figure out what games to watch? Where was your venting on the Hokies? Well, my friends I apologize. I was taking in all the glory and excitement of the 1st week of the 150th year of college football, I simply was so blissfully happy I forgot to write. Have no fear my friends, I am back again to discuss college football for the 2019 season and boy it’s going to be a great season, maybe not for my team but overall it will be fun. Let’s get it going then, here are the games that I will be watching this weekend.

Friday Games

William & Mary vs Virginia

By the time you are reading this article, this game will most likely be over. I blame my co-writer and stats guy Teddy Gillespie. I know, I am hard on him but I thought at 18 months old he would get the stats I need sooner than he is. Also, I can never understand what he is saying. That being said, it would make me so happy for William & Mary to pull off the upset. However, I don’t see that happening. Virginia is really upcoming and Coach Mendenhall is building a program there (wow that was hard to say). My pick is UVA winning by at least 2 TD’s.

(editor’s note, UVA won 52 -17. Good prediction J)

Marshall vs Boise State #24

Watching Boise State upset the Seminoles had me become very interested in this team. The freshmen quarterback Bachmeier could have a very promising career at Boise State. I am curious to see how this team does after their big win last week. I have Boise State winning this game.

(Editor’s Note: 2 for 2! Boise State snuck past Marshall, 14-7)

Saturday Games

Old Dominion vs Virginia Tech

This game last year really turned the season for the Hokies in a bad way. It was a confidence shattering game and I don’t think they ever recovered. This year, the Hokies want to beat ODU and beat them bad. This game will be in Lane Stadium and I expect a big game for Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech wins the game by a 3 score lead.

Texas A&M #12 vs #1 Clemson

Gotta love a big Top 15 matchup early in the season! What makes this game even more fun is that a Texas A&M lineman said that Texas A&M is guaranteed to upset the Tigers. Sorry, buddy I don’t see that happening. Clemson is playing at home and would love to prove that guy wrong. Clemson will win this game. It will be close but Clemson will win.

Miami vs North Carolina

UNCTheU.jpg

If my notes are correct, this is the only true ACC match-up of the weekend. Now, I could be wrong because my stats guy is literally a toddler and is already in bed. Miami had a rough loss to their rival Florida during Week 0 (yes, that’s that they call it, not a typo). UNC has a new coach and wants a big win. I know the smart pick would be Miami in this game but, I am feeling adventurous. Yes, that’s right, it’s my first UPSET PICK of the season: UNC pulls the upset over Miami. Prop bet, the turnover chain will only appear once during the game.

LSU #6 vs Texas #9

LSUvsUT.jpg

The big match up of weekend. LSU’s head coach Ed Orgeron is just a gem when it comes to sound bites and interviews. I think he is really great for the university and college football. Now, having Texas back on the big stage is also great for college football. Tom Herman is a big part of bringing Texas to the spotlight. This game will be key in whether or not Texas deserves to stay in top 10 and a college playoff contender. This will be a fun close game to watch but I am picking LSU to beat Texas.

Those are the games I will be watching this weekend. If there are any teams I missed or would like me to discuss let me know! Hope you are able to enjoy the games with friends and family with a cold drink in your hand.

Go Hokies!
