Welcome one and all to the Geek Sheets.  Here you will find a quick snapshot of some of the past week’s news headlines, but with a nerdy bent.  Well, enough of this preamble, let’s get to the stories hitting the geek-o-sphere. Oh wait, hold on before you go! We have a weekly podcast called GGR Pirate Radio and we will be talking about these stories along with all manner of things you can get geeky about, so please subscribe if you like things that are funny and awesome.  Ok, now you can continue on to the article and I will bother you again later!

James Gunn given the boot by Disney

He's got the stereotypical director pose, all he needs is a scarf to complete the look.

It would be hard to believe that anyone who loves the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been following this story, but for the 7 of you who haven’t heard, James Gunn has been relieved of his writing and directing duties for the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The choice was made due to a series of questionable tweets that surfaced from Gunn’s twitter feed’s history that were graphic and sexual in nature. The majority of the GOTG cast has come out in support of Gunn and have petitioned Disney to reconsider his firing. As of right now, there is no word to if James will ever be reinstated or if someone else will be helming the already announced Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 in the blockbuster franchise.

Star Wars Episode IX starts filming and cast is released

You may be asking, "why is this dude talking about some small, indie sci-fi franchise no one has ever heard of?" We only passively follow the series. We've been having my boy Mike write articles such as this, this and this, cataloging his feelings and theories on some of the themes and characters? Well for whatever reason we continue to report on it, and in that spirit let’s talk about Episode IX! Principal photography has begun on what very well may be one of the more anticipated Star Wars films of all time due to the dividing line that was drawn by The Last Jedi. Have I mentioned someone who runs this place has some things to say about that movie and the toxic fandom around it? I would consider checking that out!  The only major news thus far is the announcement that Keri Russell has been cast in an unspecified role, so already theories abound about her as a certain someone’s mother (COUGHReyCOUGH).  As details continue to come out from the set we will get them to you.

Patrick Stewart Ready To "make it so"…again

To try and keep the GGR Geek sheets fair and balanced, I feel it’s appropriate that since we talked about Star Wars, we will now have to talk about Star Trek.  It’s too bad there wasn’t any major news stor…OH JEAN-LUC IS BACK BABY!! Recently announced at a Las Vegas Star Trek Convention, Patrick Stewart himself announced that while he thought that story of Jean-Luc Picard has been told, he is ready to revisit the character in a new upcoming series.  This new tale will be part of a now expanding lineup of newly minted Star Trek shows being made available exclusively through the CBS All Access streaming service, which is currently set to debut its second season of the hit show Star Trek: Discovery.  At this point, some of the creative staff has been announced, and obviously the Captain himself is onboard (see what I did there?), however further details about the show’s title, premier date and additional cast is still TBD.  As long as Q and Data make an appearance, you can consider this man very happy.

Well that’s it for this week’s installment of the Geek Sheets. Stop back here each and every week to get your new bullet points on the world of dork.  As I stated before, the GGR Pirate Radio podcast will get into these subjects and more with additional opinion, speculation and theory, so if that’s your cup o’ tea then please subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.  Until next time Refugees, I'm Steve Monnich and don't be a juicebag.
